Reading News for December 12-16

Last week before the holiday break!  Hard to believe that after this week the students won't be back to school until 2012!

We are doing push in next week with first grade as usual.  So, I will be meeting with Mrs. Amish's class on Monday and Tuesday.  I will also be meeting with Mrs. Sis's group on Wednesday and Thursday.  I had switched to just meeting with the 3 groups that need the extra reading time and it is working out well, because I get to read with them 2 days in a row.

My kindergarten RtI group is progressing well, I see improvements every week with recognizing more letters and numbers.  I will meet with them as usual next week as well.

My first grade RtI group will be starting a new unit next week.  We will be working on 2 new glued sounds- an and am.  We will also add in 3 new trick words- from, or, and have.

Push in for second grade next week is a little different.  The second grade classes are doing Holidays Around the World, so we will not have our guided reading groups.  I will helping Mrs. Schultz with teaching about the Mexican Holiday Monday- Wednesday afternoon.

My second grade RtI group is starting a new unit as well.  We will be working on the vowel-consonant-e syllable.  The first vowel is long and the e is silent- cape, home, pine.  We will also be working on the exceptions to that rule as well- give, olive, active.

This is also my last week with all my students.  I am going on my maternity leave starting in January.  I have enjoyed working with the students this year so far!  I am not sure who my replacement is, but should know by the end of next week.

Happy Holidays!

Reading News for December 5-9

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  Hard to believe it is already December!

Next week in kindergarten, I will be working with my RtI group and we will be continuing with working hard on learning the letters of the alphabet and matching the sounds to go with them.  We have been doing some creative ways of writing the letters and the students seem to have fun with it!

In my first grade push in group I am working with Mrs. Amish's whole class and doing guided reading with them 2 days a week.  In Mrs. Sis's class we have switched to me working with 3 groups guided reading both days instead of the whole class.  We think it will be more beneficial to her class.

My first grade RtI group has dropped down to 3 students instead of 4 and we are working on the bonus letters f, l, and s as well as the glued sound -all.  We have added more trick words to our list and are incorporating some stories as well when we have time.

My second grade push in group with Mrs. Schultz's group we are also changing the guided reading.  I will be working with 2 groups from Monday through Thursday every day instead of the whole class twice a week.  We felt that the students are reading too many books at a time, with me, with Mrs. Schultz, and their anthology book that it is hard to keep track of which story is which.  Hopefully, this will work better.

My second grade RtI group has gone from 2 students to 3 students and we will be learning 4 new consonant suffixes next week- ness, less, ment, and ful; as well as 3 new vowel suffixes- able, ish, en.

I was able to meet many parents this week of the students I see in my RtI groups.  Great to meet you all!  Thanks for your support and help with your children!

We will be starting a new unit in my first grade group.  We will be learning the bonus letters f, l, and s.  Such as fill, miss, and puff.  We will be learning the glued sound all as in ball, call, and fall.

We will also be starting a new unit in my second grade group.  We will be learning how to read and spell multisyllabic words.  We will also be introducing 4 new conconant suffixes and 3 new vowel suffixes.  Lastly, 2 new vowel teams- au and aw.

Reading News for November 14-18

I hope everyone enjoys their long weekend!  Thanks to all our Veterans!

My kindergarten RtI group is making some great improvements in letter recognition and sounds of the letters.  We will continue with more games and puzzles with the letters and sounds.

My first grade RtI group has worked hard on all the new digraphs the past week.  We will continue with those next week and take a test.  We have also been reading a story together, Cod Fish, and working on comprehension with the story.

My second grade RtI group has had a busy couple weeks working on lots of new concepts.  They have learned some new vowel and consonant suffixes as well as new vowel teams, ow, oe, and oa.  We will continue with these concepts next week and add a few more examples of each before we take a test to see how well they can remember all the new concepts.

Reading News for November 7-11

Can you believe it is already November?  October went by so quick!

I started with my full RtI kindergarten group last week and am slowly getting to know the students.  Next week we will continue with the K-Pals and Core Reinforcement in reading and math.

My first grade push-in guided reading groups are continuing to progress in the right direction.  We keep moving students around in the groups because they are all starting to take off on their reading journey.  Very neat to see how much improvement they can make each week in learning how to read new words!
My first grade RtI group has been working hard this week on the digraphs.  They are starting to get real good at tapping out words to learn to read them.  We will get into writing and reading whole sentences next week.

My second grade push-in guided reading group is doing well.  We are busy reading about all sorts of new non-fiction books like pirate ships, inside our body, beekeepers, and firefighters.
My second grade RtI group has been busy this week learning all about ending vowel and consonant suffixes.  We will continue with this next week because there was so much to cover we couldn't get through it all this week.  We also had many new trick words added to our list to learn.

Have a great weekend and remember to turn your clocks back on Saturday night for that extra hour of sleep!

Reading News for October 24-28

Next week with my 1st grade RtI group we will continue reviewing and practicing the consonants f, l, m, n, r, and s.  We are working hard on blending these consonants together with other letters and forming three letter words.  We are also practicing writing and spelling these words correctly.  We are practicing sight words and trick words everyday as well.
First grade push in with Mrs. Amish's and Mrs. Sis's room is continuing to go well.  The students are really growing in their reading skills.
My 2nd grade RtI group is finishing up the unit this week on bonus letters f,l,s, and sometimes z, welded or "glued" sounds, and vowel teams.  We will start next week on a new unit in the concept of closed syllable exceptions, more glued sounds, story retelling, and more vowel teams- oi and oy.
Second grade push in next week is a writing workshop week, so we will be working on a descriptive paragraph on the students Halloween costume.

Have a great time at the Halloween Party tonight if you are going!

Reading News Week of October 3-7

Welcome to October!  can you believe that September is already over?  Hopefully we have some better weather in October than all the rain we had in September!

Reading News September 26-30

It has been a busy week!  RtI is in full swing!  It is going great and I am enjoying all the time I get to spend with the first and second graders reading.
I am working with Mrs. Amish's and Mrs. Sis's rooms each two days a week in the morning.  The kids are so great and I love working with each student in such a small group.
I am also working with Mrs. Schultz's room four days a week in the afternoon.  Again, I am getting to know the second graders and working with them in the small group, which is really fun.
My intervention groups are going well and I think the students are enjoying the individual time they get with me.
Next week we start with kindergarten!
Happy First Day of Fall!

Week of September 5-9

Welcome Back to the new school year of 2011-2012!  I have been anxious to start back this year.  I have been on an extended maternity leave for the past two years.  I am in a new position here at Ide this year and excited about it.  I had taught second grade before becoming the reading interventionist here at Ide.

Mrs. Nessling and I have been busy getting everything ready for the reading program.  We have been testing all the students and getting all the programs set up to start in the next couple weeks.
